The Winner is…
December 31st, 2006 by Wen
Thanks to you guys the winner of Incredipete’s contest for a blog is Michael! YAY!
I was going to have him do a guest entry, but we got busy. Instead he wrote a message in my comments:

Michael wrote:
Thanks everybody for the nominations and votes. I’m looking forward to getting started with the blog. I’m sure Wendy will point everybody there as soon as it is up and available.;-)

This morning, as promised, I had Mr. Random Number Generator draw a number for the winner of the cashmere and Koigu.
Mr. RNG picked #3 (out of 36 entries). That winner is:
(drumroll….)

You guys have no idea how pleased I was when I matched up the number to the comment.
(By the way, comments come to my email which are then placed in a folder. If you were the first to comment you are assigned #1 etc. One entry per person, not comment. Your mileage may vary.)
You see, Kristen was the very first person to ever comment on my first blog when I was over at Diaryland. (don’t bother looking for it, the blog had another name and I lost everything in the great Diary-X crash of 2006. Note to others: backup your files!) I didn’t even have a comments section then- she left me a note in the notes section. I don’t remember how she found my blog-most likely some snarky comment on PorkTornado or Incredipete (Kristen? Feel free to join in here). Over the past 2/12 years we’ve become blog friends. So YAY!
Anyway, I IM’d her this morning with the news. So she’s notified. The package will go out Wednesday. It would have gone out Tuesday, but that’s a National Day of Mourning here in the US. Maybe it’s just me, but I think Crazypants President Bush went a little over the top to close all the Post/Govt. offices just for James Brown.
Kristen is also a Knit From Your Stash 2007 participant, so it’s an awesome way to get some new yarn without buying anything.
Which got me thinking…
I AM decidedly NOT participating in KFYS. I buy yarn as an inspiration to knit things. I buy it to inspire me color-wise, or texture-wise. But I don’t always end up using THAT yarn. And at some point some of the yarn loses it’s inspiring qualities for me. Or I tried knitting with it and it just didn’t work out.
So I decided that I am going to have my own destashing thing, but with a twist:

Each month or so I’m going to give away some of the yarn that’s been marinating in my stash begging to be knit. As in past yarn giveaways it’ll be in some sort of contest form.
There’s only one caveat: You have to be a KFYS participant.
I realize that a lot of knitters who voted for my brother do not have blogs. That’s okay, though if you’re reading knit blogs you should have one. (c’mon! ALL the cool kids are doing it!) I am going to take people at their word. If you say you’re a KFYS’er and you’re lying I won’t know. But the knitting gods WILL know and your knitting karma will SUCK.
If you do have a blog you need to download a button AND SAVE IT TO YOUR OWN SERVER (I used 9GB of bandwidth in December. I have Stephanie to blame thank for that. And Pete was kind enough to not charge me. So no bandwidth theft, okay?)

The January giveaway is done- I’ll let you know when the February giveaway is and what you have to do for it.
And since I was really into making buttons today, here’s a button for KFYS Enablers:

I’ll leave you with a conversation I had with the BF today when I was telling him about my contests:
“So I was thinking about how I like to give yarn to people, and how I have a lot of yarn that’s been marinating in my stash for awhile that I should give to good homes…”
“Marinating?”
“Yeah, and anyway I thought that giving it to people who’ve committed to not buying yarn for 9 whole months would be fun.”
“I didn’t realize that yarn goes bad.”
He’s funny, that man.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
Today was just a Really Good Day, and Wen started it all. W00ty w00ty w00t! I won a second blog contest because I gave blood, too. If my luck keeps up, I may have to be a Yarn Fairy, too. That’s actually one of my goals, to be able to Give Back to the knitters like you’re doing - once things settle around here.
I didn’t realize that I was the FIRST person to leave you a note on Diaryland, but I do know that I was reading your blog from the very first post - which makes me think I found it through the Most Recently Updated section. Or maybe Pork Tornado.
Funny, there are lots of really cool people at Diaryland, but then they all find better blogging sites. Hmm!
J: Oh, yarn can go bad. Yarn Juju builds up, for good or bad, while it stews in a stash. If you pass it over for too many projects, it will develop negative energy, and when you finally do try to use it for a project, it’ll get all splitty and the stitches will rearrange themselves on the needles. The only way to undo this curse is to give the yarn to someone else. It resets the yarn’s memory (unless it was cursed at the time it was skeined).
Congratulations to both Michael and Kristen on their wins! What a lovely way to close out 2006. Happy New Year!
I want in!I was thinking that I ought to knit up all my yarn, which isn’t all that much, before I even think of getting more and Ta Dah! you made it worth my while.I like reading your blog, PLEEEEZE write more often! One a week is killin me.
Thanks for the great buttons - and happy new year! I’m trying my best to break La before I break
Stacey, aint gonna happen. You have not seen my stash girl-friend!
Wen, great buttons! I’m gonna yoink a couple if you don’t mind.
Happy Double-Oh-Seven!
I think it’s a measure of your character that you are welcoming to non-bloggers as well. I read lots of blogs daily but don’t have one and I can count on one hand the bloggers that respond to a non-blogger comment…even when you are providing them with (in this case, crochet) an answer they’ve been looking for regarding a stitch problem. It’s almost like most regard non-bloggers as red-headed stepchildren…and I think it’s just plain rude. Okay, enough whining from me…
I, too, wish you’d blog more often but understand that Life sometimes gets in the way.
Count me in for the KFYS knitalong…and I’d be happy to provide photographic proof of my knitting. lol
Ooo, this is coolness squared! Look for your enabled button in my sidebar soon. Bad yarn juju? Egads!
Thanks for the buttons. I am knitting from my stash with a couple of exceptions. I will be knitting models and I get yarn for doing that, and I will of course be getting sock yarn.
Congrats to your brother and Kristen for both of their wins. What a great way for both of them to start the new year.
Happy New Year!!!
Barb
See I just want to taunt them and make them cry. This is why I’m Not A Nice Person.
Congrats to all the winners!
You said it perfectly. I don’t have a huge stash, and I usually buy yarn with one project in mind, but sometimes it doesn’t work out for one reason or another.
I, as well, am definately not participating either. In fact, I just got done ordering some of that camel yarn. *happy dance*
Hi! I can’t participate. I got the Harlot’s “Rules” for Christmas and took the little test about the level of your of your yarn addiction. I was an “a,” to all of which she said, emphatically–”Get yourself to the nearest yarn shop! You have NOTHING!” Clearly my 2007 will have to be spent in stash enhancement! Oh my!
Hey Wendy!!!
You are a hoot…and I was astonished at your breadth of knowledge…tell that guy to snap you up fast, beacuse I have a few in mind……loved meeting you and YES! look at your finished projest page….you have finished SO many projects.
okay for now, but I think I am going to post the yarn porn picture.
