Hiatus

Tomorrow I announce February’s Yarn Fairy contest. Also, there will be some discussion about when to have the next Anti Social Knitter’s meetup.

Look at me, I’m a lady of leisure. I’ve got my drink in one hand, and my (insert hobby here) in the other. All while I’m stretched out on my “ched” ( that would be my chaise which is more like a bed. “Chaise” + “bed” = “ched”). Now all I need is my really hot “cabana” boy AKA the BF to refill my drink…

Where is he? Oh yes, I remember now. He got a job. A real job. And this is the way our relationship has gone since we’ve been together. When I work, he’s off. When I’m off, he works. So now I have to refill my own drinks. Hmph.

A hiatus is a mixed blessing. One the one hand, right as you were absolutely going to stab the extremely annoying coworker in the face with a plastic spoon stolen from catering your hiatus starts and you blissfully forget that the offending coworker exists.

On the other hand, you don’t get paid for your week off. Given the choice between an unpaid week of vacation or killing a gene pool polluting coworker while pulling in a good hourly plus health and welfare benefits…well. It is kind of a toss up.

This hiatus I do have some things planned. Taxes for one. Getting a crown for my tooth is another. Also the BF and I have begun our search for a house to move into to together. Which means that I need to go through each room and start getting rid of quite a bit of the crap that I have accumulated here in the last 5 years.

Also, though I try to avoid places where other hairdressers might be, I did actually have to go to the hair show this weekend to get some new shears. I might have mentioned once or twice that I hate hairdressers with a passion I usually only reserve for other hairdressers and possibly some makeup artists. And hairdressers.

If you can imagine an entire convention center full of people with outdated hair color, attitude (and not the skills to back it up if you judge like I do by what sort of hair disaster they’re sporting) and a lot of loud thumping techno while some jackass tries to dance and shout “teach” you his fantastically lame ass “technique” that was new 15 years ago, then multiply that by 120 more booths with more jackass hairdressers and more thumping techno and you have my eighth level of personal hell. I am sorry I didn’t bring my camera, because guuurl, let me tell you there were some seriously violent offenders of every kind of fashion faux pas.

I hate hair shows, in case you hadn’t picked that up yet. I had to work them for 10 years, so my hatred is complete and binding. As well as enduring. The only reason I went (and paid $50 to get in) is because I needed some new and very expensive shears. They normally go for $550, but they were $300 at the show. And I can tolerate almost anything for an hour if I’m going to save a couple a hundred bucks.

Oh, and just to prove that this is indeed a knitting blog I’ll probably do some knitting. In fact, I actually do have some knitting to show you. It’s only a tiny bit, as I am completely bored with my knitting and yarn and whatnot. I have a ton of cashmere laceweight begging to be knit up into a beautiful scarf for myself, and yet I can’t seem to find a pattern I like. At all.

Anyway, on to my knitting. Which is now an FO. And sitting at Fedex waiting to be shipped to my mom. She had some not at all minor surgery today (bowel resection if you must know). Anyway, she’s out of recovery now and doing fine. But she has a lot of recovery time to go and that includes walking around the hospital. So she really needed a pair of cashmere mukluks. And over a hundred bucks in guilt roses. Because that’s how I roll.

This weird thing, undone:

cashmere slipper

Becomes this:

finished slipper

Like I said, all done. Just imagine that the other one looked exactly like that one above.

Pattern specs:

Somerset Designs Suede Soled Slippers, original design by Lorna Miser (yes THAT Lorna)

Yarn: Jade Sapphire 4ply, yarn doubled, colorway: Blue Spruce

Needle: Susan Bates 12″ Aluminum straights US size 7

Seriously. I think I am single handedly trying to keep Jade Sapphire in business. I may have ordered 4 hanks of 8 ply to remake some of the slippers I made last year.

Also, I am really not sure what the hell my love affair is with the Bates aluminums, but lately they’re the only thing I want to knit with. Even though I have an embarrassing amount of wooden, addi’s, knit picks etc. I like the pointy and slightly slippery (but not too slippery) feel of these needles. If knit picks made straights, well, I’d probably buy those too. But for now I’m all about these.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the next KFYS Yarn Fairy contest and poll about when to have the next ASK meeting.

The convention sounds horrible. I have always wondered about some of the hairdressers I see in salons whose hair looks horrible and the people that actually trust them to cut their hair.

    the slipper looked great.

I always like going to the stylist with the crappy hair. By my twisted figuring, it means that s/he does a better job on everyone, but can’t cut his/her own, so someone else has to do it, and it’s never as good.
(That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. Given that my idea of a good cut is one that allows me to leave the house with dripping hair and never end up looking like Tom Petty, maybe people shouldn’t take my stylistic advice.)
I like Bates needles too. I like the colors. I wish I could use them more.

I like the Bates needles too–although the color is rubbing off the ones I’m using now. The slipper(s) look great.

Thanks for an entertaining post and I’m sorry you had to endure the convention. I didn’t even know they MADE $550 scissors. And here I was bitching about the expense of fabric shears.
The slipper looks comfy. Cashmere, yum.

Next time you gotta go to one of those gawd-awful things, give me a call. I’ll go with you and help remind the snarkier side to take pictures. I’m good about that, just ask Jen.

I was just thinking about the ASK meeting for this month. Most of my February is clear except for the 11th and the 17th and the morning of the 24th. I’ll probably have a carload full as I’ll volunteer to bring up Michelle and Nancy, both local to me.

Looking forward to seeing the girls again!

OOh, I forgot to mention that there are times when I really prefer Susan Bates needles. My first pair was Susan Bates - light blue, size 8. I don’t have them anymore because I really don’t use straights, but they were definitely my favorites. For sock needles, if I need to use DPNs, I guarantee they’ll be Susan Bates. I just have one pair that was a little grindy-feeling, but others are perfect.
