The first step to recovery

Is admitting you are powerless over your addiction.

Hello. My name is Wendy. And I am a pack rat.

The Great Purge of ‘07 (otherwise known as Pitch and Bitch) is in full swing here at chez Slowknitter. The main focus of my time and hatred has been the dining room/ storage/ I-have-no-idea-where-to-put-this room. It has taken me three solid full days to get through most of this room. The wigs, the hair product, the filing (hello, I don’t file), the sewing crap (hello, I don’t sew either). The paper, my god, all of the fucking little bits and scraps of paper that are completely meaningless yet all have to be inspected in case I run across the winning lottery ticket that I’m sure I left in there somewhere.

The rest of the house purge/pack should go smoothly. And faster. That room was the biggest nightmare, which is why I tackled it first.

Knitting?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…HA. Oh yeah, this is supposed to be a knittng blog isn’t it? People, don’t lie to me. I know you don’t come here for the knitting. It’s okay really, but I’ll put up a few photos as a show of good faith.

Here’s my boss’ wrap gift. Notice it’s not finished. And we wrapped March 7th. It’s Jade Sapphire 8-ply cashmere. Flannel Suit colorway.

I started a sock. It’s toe up, obviously, using Wendy’s generic toe up pattern. Because I wanted that black, grey, and pink sock to stripe. Does that look like striping to you? Help me out here. This is Scout J’s sock yarn. I like it. I love the color. I’m knitting 60 sts on size 1 addi’s. I started the sock at the beginning of a color. Should I have started in the middle of a color? I’ve only knit with self striping yarn once, and it was months ago and now I don’t remember because my brain is made of soft delicious cheese.

Help a girl out here if you can knitters…

There hasn’t been much knitting around here as you can see. For a couple of reasons… the aforementioned whinefest and, well, I have a new addiction…

It’s called Second Life. It’s kinda like the Sims, except it’s more fun. Here are some “photos” I took in second life:

You can own a house in Second life. This is ours. It’s a little pricey though, so when our “lease” runs out we’re going to move.

SLparadise

This is the next place we’re going to live:

SLtrailerpark

Seriously, who doesn’t want to live in a trailer park? It’s awesome.

There are all kinds of places to rent or to buy. This one seems to have a little problem:

SLfiresale

There are all sorts of things to do in SL. If you can imagine it, someone has made it happen there.

Here’s one of my favorite places, the Second Life LYS “Knit This”:

SLlys

Why yes I am knitting a lace scarf.

Each sim has a different theme. This one is an abandoned amusement park.

SLfunpark

My avatar went inner-tubing down a gorge:

SLinnertube

That was pretty fun. What wasn’t fun was some freak came out and started shooting at me. There I was enjoying a slow ride down the river when Rambo came out and started firing away with semi-automatic fire. When I asked him why in the hell he was shooting at me he said he thought I was with the Navy.

Yeah, right dude. And the navy employs chicks doing undercover re-con wearing t-shirts, madras shorts, and polka dotted innertubes…

You can swim with whales:

SLshamu

You can get your political groove on :

SLpolitics

And there’s no shortage of snark here either:
SL snark

What I don’t have photos of are the, ahem, more adult activities in Second Life. But yeah, you can get your real grove on there too, if you want.

It’s fun, try it out. Though if you have a very old computer with not a lot of memory it’ll be tricky (or if you have a mac) but there are work arounds if you’re patient. Drop me a comment if you join up so I can find you online.

There will be a KFYS contest in April… It’s just going to be after I move. And find the yarn. And figure out what I really can spare. I have un-offically joined the KFYS. The move is expensive and I went to my accountant for taxes and uhhhhhh….. I spent A LOT of money on yarn last year. A LOT. Like more than my first two cars combined a lot. (hey, they were old volkswagons, but still.)

Thankfully, my accountant is a knitter.

    Hi, Wendy!

What colorway is that Scout yarn? I just made a pair of socks with some of her yarn. Cuff down. I started at the beginning of a long run of color and it worked out pretty well.

Look me up once I get off of Orientation Island.

I needed a new time-waster. Civ III is getting boring

HAHAHA! Isn’t Second Life the one with its own economy, and someone was trying to get the SL money to work in real life, too? Just in case, make sure you don’t throw away any lottery tickets in the game, either.

Can’t you write off all your yarny gifts as charitable donations?

Hey! Good to hear from you.
Good luck with the move. I just recently recycled 7 dozen boxes. 7. Dozen. ARGGGH. But of course I was keeping them around because they might be useful and it burns my little miserly heart to have to BUY a box.
My filing system is 3-phase (because I too dislike filing): 1) inbox - anything that needs keeping. No organization, just a pile
    2) small plastic filing cabinet with folders for each category. Can’t ever have too many folders. Inbox gets sorted into here when the pile gets too big. Sorting only takes an hour once a month or so.
    3) permanent storage, i.e. cardboard boxes full of folders and envelopes. When stuff doesn’t fit into small filing cabinet anymore it ages out to permanent storage. I scribble the file name and date on the 8×12 envelope or folder so I remember how old it is.

It works pretty well for me with a minimum of effort, and I can find anything I need without too much digging. Permanent storage is the hardest to get to but has the oldest crap and so is almost never needed except when I have to dig out 4 years of tax returns or stuff like that.

I have a friend who works for Second Life, it looks like it’s finally got off the ground. Cool pictures.

missed you. If your gonna live in a Barbie world, you gotta be packing a .40cal glock with a laser site. Mmmmm, better yet, make it a .45 instead,as long as your not recoil sensitive. Have fun!

I haven’t knit up my scout yarn, but on my Socks That Rock, it didn’t look stripey when I did the toe first, but when I started the foot, it was fine. So knit a little more before you make a decision!
